Tilaurakot (Ancient Kapilvastu)
तिलौराकोट (प्राचीन कपिलवस्तु)
Shuddhodhan Rural Municipality, Kapilvastu, Lumbini Province

Overview
Tilaurakot, in Kapilvastu district west of Lumbini, is widely identified as the ancient Shakya capital of Kapilavastu — the city where Siddhartha Gautama grew up as a prince before leaving in search of enlightenment. The site preserves the ramparts, gateways, moat and foundations of a fortified early city set in quiet farmland and forest.
Historical background
Archaeology shows occupation from around the 8th century BCE to the early centuries CE. Excavations have revealed successive defensive walls, an eastern gateway (traditionally the one through which the prince departed), streets, residential blocks and stupas, alongside coins and pottery spanning many centuries.
Cultural significance
As the boyhood home of the Buddha, Tilaurakot is among the most significant Buddhist heritage sites in Nepal and a key pilgrimage and research destination, complementing Lumbini. It sits on Nepal's UNESCO tentative list.
Architectural details
The remains are largely below ground: brick fortification walls enclosing a rectangular city, eastern and western gateways, a central palace area and surrounding votive stupas. Nearby Kanthaka Stupa, Niglihawa and Gotihawa form a wider archaeological landscape.
Condition & conservation
Current condition: Protected archaeological park; excavations ongoing
Managed by the Lumbini Development Trust and Department of Archaeology with international research partnerships; on the UNESCO tentative list.
