Swargadwari
स्वर्गद्वारी, प्युठान
Swargadwari Municipality, Pyuthan, Lumbini Province

Overview
Swargadwari ('gateway to heaven') is a major pilgrimage and ashram complex on a high ridge in southern Pyuthan, at around 2,100 m. Founded by the ascetic Swargadwari Mahaprabhu in the 19th century, it is a centre of Vedic study, cow protection and Shiva worship that draws pilgrims from across western Nepal.
Historical background
The ashram was established by Maharshi Narayan Khatiwada, known as Swargadwari Mahaprabhu, who maintained an eternal sacrificial fire (akhanda dhuni) and large herds of cattle. It grew into one of the most important religious institutions of the mid-western hills.
Cultural significance
Swargadwari is a leading pilgrimage destination during Baisakh Purnima and other festivals, blending ashram tradition, Vedic learning and Shiva devotion. The site is associated with rituals for ancestors and liberation.
Architectural details
The hilltop complex centres on the temple and the perpetual fire shrine, with ashram halls, rest-houses, cow sheds (goth) and viewpoints overlooking the Dhaulagiri and surrounding Himalaya. Architecture is functional ashram style rather than monumental.
Condition & conservation
Current condition: Active pilgrimage and ashram site
Run by the Swargadwari ashram trust; accessibility and pilgrim infrastructure in remote terrain are ongoing concerns.
