Manakamana Temple
मनकामना मन्दिर
Gorkha Municipality, Gorkha, Gandaki Province

Overview
Manakamana, perched at about 1,300 m on a spur overlooking the Trishuli and Marsyangdi valleys, is one of the most visited temples in Nepal. Its name means 'wish-fulfilling' (mana = heart, kamana = wish), and pilgrims come to seek the blessing of the goddess Bhagwati, an incarnation of Parvati.
Historical background
Worship at Manakamana is tied to the 17th-century Gorkha court and the legend of Queen of King Ram Shah, whose divine power was revealed after her death. The current three-tiered temple stands on this long-venerated site; since 1998 a cable car from Kurintar has transformed access and visitor numbers.
Cultural significance
Manakamana is a leading destination for vow-fulfilment pilgrimage, especially during Dashain, and is closely associated with the Gorkha dynasty that unified Nepal. Animal sacrifice is part of its ritual tradition.
Architectural details
The temple is a square, four-roofed pagoda on a stepped base, with carved struts and gilded finials, set in a bustling bazaar and rest-house precinct on the ridge. A sacred tree and sacrificial area stand before the shrine.
Condition & conservation
Current condition: Active; very heavily visited, accessible by cable car
Managed by a temple trust; visitor pressure and crowd management are the main concerns at this high-traffic shrine.
