Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave
गुप्तेश्वर महादेव गुफा
Pokhara Metropolitan City, Kaski, Gandaki Province

Overview
Gupteshwor Mahadev is a sacred limestone cave on the southern edge of Pokhara, sheltering a revered self-formed Shiva lingam. The cave runs for several hundred metres past dripstone formations to a chamber from which the waters of the adjacent Davis Falls (Patale Chhango) can be seen thundering through the rock.
Historical background
The cave's lingam is said to have been discovered centuries ago and has been venerated ever since; 'Gupteshwor' means the 'hidden lord'. The site has been progressively developed with steps, lighting and shrines to accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims.
Cultural significance
It is one of Pokhara's most important Shiva shrines, busiest on Maha Shivaratri and during the festival season, valued for the combination of subterranean natural wonder and living worship.
Architectural details
The shrine is the cave itself: a descending passage of stalactites and stalagmites with the naturally formed lingam at its heart, fitted with stairways, railings and devotional images leading to the falls-view chamber.
Condition & conservation
Current condition: Active pilgrimage site with developed access
Managed by a local committee; protecting the cave formations from visitor wear and humidity is the main concern.
