Guhyeshwari Temple
गुह्येश्वरी मन्दिर
Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Kathmandu, Bagmati Province

Overview
The Guhyeshwari Temple stands close to the Pashupatinath complex on the banks of the Bagmati, dedicated to the goddess as Guhyeshwari (also Guhjeshwari). It is counted among the Shakti Peethas — sites sanctified where parts of the goddess Sati are said to have fallen — and is a major centre of tantric worship.
Historical background
The present temple is traditionally attributed to King Pratap Malla in the 17th century, on a site of much older veneration. Its close ritual link to Pashupatinath reflects the long-standing pairing of Shiva and Shakti shrines in the valley.
Cultural significance
Guhyeshwari is one of the most sacred goddess shrines in Nepal, drawing tantric practitioners and pilgrims, and is integral to the festivals and ritual cycle of the Pashupati area.
Architectural details
Unlike a towered temple, the central shrine is a low, gilded-roofed structure over a sunken kalasha (sacred vessel) marking the deity, enclosed within a courtyard with metalwork canopies, struts and corner finials.
Condition & conservation
Current condition: Active tantric pilgrimage site, well maintained
Within the Pashupati cultural landscape; maintained in coordination with the Pashupati Area Development Trust.
