Dantakali Temple
दन्तकाली मन्दिर, धरान
Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, Sunsari, Koshi Province

Overview
Dantakali, on Vijayapur hill overlooking the city of Dharan in Sunsari, is a revered Shakti Peeth where, by tradition, a tooth (danta) of the goddess Sati fell as Vishnu dismembered her body. It forms part of a cluster of important hilltop shrines around Dharan that includes Budhasubba and Pindeshwor.
Historical background
The shrine belongs to the wider network of fifty-one Shakti Peethas across the subcontinent and has been worshipped for generations by Hindu and Kirat communities of eastern Nepal, growing alongside the development of Dharan town below.
Cultural significance
Dantakali is a key goddess shrine of the eastern Terai-hill region, especially active during Dashain, drawing pilgrims who climb the forested hill to offer worship and sacrifices.
Architectural details
The shrine is a modest temple set in the Vijayapur forest, marked by a sacred stone, trident offerings and bells, within a green precinct shared with neighbouring temples on the ridge above the city.
Condition & conservation
Current condition: Active pilgrimage site
Maintained by a local temple committee; protection of the surrounding Vijayapur forest is part of its upkeep.
