Chhinnamasta Bhagwati Temple
छिन्नमस्ता भगवती (सखडा), सप्तरी
Chhinnamasta Rural Municipality, Saptari, Madhesh Province

Overview
The Chhinnamasta Bhagwati Temple, also called Sakhadeshwari, stands at Sakhada near Rajbiraj in Saptari district. It is dedicated to Chhinnamasta — the self-decapitated goddess who is one of the ten Mahavidyas of Tantric tradition — and is a powerful Shakti Peeth drawing pilgrims from Nepal and India.
Historical background
The shrine has been venerated for centuries in the Maithili cultural region of the eastern Terai. Its tantric iconography and association with the Mahavidyas make it an important node in the network of goddess pilgrimage across the Mithila plains.
Cultural significance
Chhinnamasta is a major centre of goddess worship in Madhesh, busiest during the Dashain and Ram Navami fairs, when great numbers of devotees gather and offerings are made at the temple tank and shrine.
Architectural details
The temple enshrines a black-stone image of the headless Devi flanked by attendant goddesses (the Pancha-bhagini), set within a walled precinct with a sacred pond and subsidiary shrines in the flat Terai landscape.
Condition & conservation
Current condition: Active pilgrimage site
Maintained by a local temple committee; an important but under-documented regional Shakti shrine.
