Bindhyabasini Temple
विन्ध्यवासिनी मन्दिर, पोखरा
Pokhara Metropolitan City, Kaski, Gandaki Province

Overview
Bindhyabasini Temple crowns a small wooded hill at the north end of Pokhara's old town, dedicated to the goddess Bhagwati (Durga) in her Bindhyabasini form, brought — by tradition — from the Vindhya hills of India. It is the spiritual heart of old Pokhara and a lively centre of festivals and ritual.
Historical background
The temple is traditionally said to have been established in the 18th century when the king of the then Kaski state brought an image of the goddess from India. The hilltop precinct grew into a cluster of shrines around the main white shikhara-domed temple.
Cultural significance
Bindhyabasini is the principal temple of Pokhara, busiest during Dashain and on Saturdays, and is a focal point of the city's Newar and wider Hindu community life, with weddings, sacrifices and seasonal fairs held in its grounds.
Architectural details
The main shrine is a white, dome-topped (shikhara/gumbaj-style) temple with a silver doorway, surrounded by smaller pagoda and dome shrines to Shiva, Hanuman, Ganesh and Saraswati on the landscaped hilltop.
