Bhaktapur Durbar Square

Overview

Bhaktapur Durbar Square is the royal square of the ancient city of Bhaktapur (Khwopa). Less crowded and remarkably intact, it preserves the atmosphere of a medieval Newar capital, with palaces, temples, water tanks and brick-paved streets.

Historical background

Bhaktapur was the capital of the unified Malla kingdom until the valley split into three city-states in the 15th century. Many of its finest monuments date to the reigns of kings Yaksha Malla and Bhupatindra Malla (late 17th–early 18th century).

Cultural significance

Bhaktapur is renowned for its continuing craft traditions — pottery, woodcarving and the famous 'juju dhau' (king curd). It hosts the spectacular Bisket Jatra new-year chariot festival.

Architectural details

The square is celebrated for the 55-Window Palace (Pachpanna Jhyale Durbar), the gilded Golden Gate (Sun Dhoka), the stone Vatsala Durga temple, the great bell, and — nearby in Taumadhi Square — the five-tiered Nyatapola, the tallest pagoda temple in Nepal.

Condition & conservation

Current condition: Very well preserved; some structures restored after 2015 earthquake

Bhaktapur has a long-running, internationally supported conservation program and collects an entry fee dedicated to heritage upkeep.

3D model coming soon

A 3D Gaussian Splat capture of Bhaktapur Durbar Square is planned. Our reference capture of the Chandeswori Temple is available in the viewer today.
